Until 1930, French was the official language of instruction at the University of Ghent and all other universities in Belgium.
When the University of Ghent introduced Dutch as the language of instruction in 1930, it became the first university in Belgium to provide education in Dutch.
The first courses of the Faculty of Law were taught in the Baudeloo Abbey. From 1826, the majority of the then university education was gathered in the former monastery and college of the Jesuits, which covered most of the city block between Paddenhoek, Voldersstraat, Lange Mere (now University Street), and Korte Mere.
Due to the development of scientific education and the increasing interest in higher education in general, the construction of new laboratories and institutes soon became essential. The other faculties left the "Old University," which is still used by the Faculty of Law to this day.
