On the former island of Île aux Javiaux, on the western side of the Pont Neuf on the Île de la Cité, the Grand Master of the Knights Templar, Jacques de Molay, was burned in a low smouldering fire in 1314. You can see a small plaque at this location.
Jacques de Molay was condemned by Philip the Fair and Pope Clement V. Jacques de Molay supposedly cursed them and declared that they would both die within a year. And so it happened. This story is uncertain and has a touch of legend. The fact is that the pope and the French king did indeed die very unexpectedly within that year.
