Kraantje Lek

Description

Kraantje Lek is the name of a historical site in Overveen, near Haarlem. It features, among other things, a restaurant that bears the same name, a playground with a massive seesaw, the dune top De Blinkert, and at its foot the impressive remaining part of a particularly large elm, which has been known in Kennemerland for centuries as De holle boom. In Haarlem and the surrounding areas, it was once claimed that children were born in the holle boom. Among others, Nicolaas Beets and Lennaert Nijgh wrote texts about the holle boom at Kraantje Lek, and Jan van Walré once wrote a poem about the Blinkert. Godfried Bomans also frequently referred to Kraantje Lek in his stories. The holle boom was removed at the end of 2007 but was replaced in mid-2008 by a bronze replica made by Kees Verkade.

The Kraantje Lek Trophy has been a Dutch speed skating tournament for women since 1981. The competition is held every year in the last weekend of November or the first weekend of December at the Kunstijsbaan Kennemerland in Haarlem. The women compete in a mini all-round competition (500, 1500, 1000, and 3000 meters); this all-round tournament also serves as a qualifying event for the Dutch all-round championships.
