Der Ortsname wird sich von dem altgermanischen Wort aske ableiten, das auf die Baumart Esche verweist. Im weiteren Sinne bedeutete das Wort eine Speerspitze aus Eschenholz. Möglicherweise leitet sich der Name also von einem früher an dieser Stelle gelegenen Eschenwald ab. Es könnte auch mit dem Wort ascha in Verbindung stehen, das auf einen Wassername verweist.
