Baudelooabdij

Only the 17th century chapel of the abbey, called Baudelo, was saved, although restoration is very much required today.

Mozart visited Ghent with his father as a young boy. He played on the organ of this chapel.  Although there is now no organ anymore, at least the chapel should be saved.

During the first quarter of the 20th century, the universities library was located in these buildings. Later on, it became the city library. Since years, this space is not being used. There are plans to make this a cultural centre.

The Baudelostraat refers to the former Baudelo abbey, which was covering this area.

The abbey was one of the largest abbeys in Ghent, during the 17th century. Unfrotunately, not much is left otday of that old glory. At the end of the 18th century the monks were driven away from the abbey by the French Republicans.  They changed the church in a ‘Temple of Reason’. It became a school.

The abbey garden was transformed in a herb garden, called the Baudelopark. Unfortunaltey, the construction of the Bibliotheekstraat destroyed a big part of the garden. Only a few unique old trees remain stand.  After 100 years, they moved this herb garden to the Ledeganckstraat, where the University herb garden stil is today.
