Furfooz, this district of Dinant is located on a gentle slope north of the Lesse. The small village has fewer than two hundred inhabitants, but is world-famous for its prehistoric findings in various caves with marvelous names, such as Trou qui fume, Trou des nutons, Trou du frontal and Trou du grand duc. In the latter case, it is not about the hole of a grand duke, but about an owl. The eagle owl is called grand duc in French. Most of these caves are open to visit today.
The renowned Belgian geologist and paleontologist Edouard Dupont (1841-1911), who was from Dinant and educated at the University of Leuven, discovered the skull cap, mandible, radius and a hand bone of a Neanderthal in the Trou de la Naulette halfway through the nineteenth century. His discovery is seen as early evidence of human evolution.
