This fortress, whose origins date back to a fortified castle from the 12th century, was built by the Swabian emperor Frederick of Hohenstaufen, destroyed in 1462, restored and enlarged under the Habsburgs in the 15th century, and again ravaged in 1633 during the Thirty Years' War. Haut-Koenigsbourg is today the most famous castle in Alsace. The view from its battlements reveals its strategic importance. Visitors can discover the ruins of the castles of Franckenbourg, Ramstein, and Ortenbourg to the north, the banks of the German Rhine up to the Black Forest to the east, Hohneck and the Grand Ballon far to the south, and the ruins of Oedenbourg or Petite-Koenigsbourg to the east.
