After the Westerschelde tunnel, it still takes at least 5 kilometers before you get a bit of that Zeeland feeling back. In the past, this forgotten side of Zeeland had many castles and knightly estates. The Dutch counts had castles built, but they were not the only ones; the bishops of Utrecht also had them built to better maintain the peace within their borders. Until the construction of castles, only the wealthy high nobility could afford to do so. Not much of this castle splendor remains, but a new splendor has emerged. Zeeuws-Vlaanderen now has, among other things, many tree dikes, which are one of the characteristics of the Zeeland landscape.
