The Maasplassen is, with its 3000 ha, the largest contiguous water sports area in the Netherlands. The lake area is located in Midden-Limburg, between various villages and cities, including Roermond, Maasbracht, and Heel.
The Maasplassen were created through gravel extraction, mainly in the last century. This resulted in large contiguous lakes. The surrounding municipalities benefited from this by turning it into a tourist attraction. Along the lakes are various hospitality establishments, marinas, day beaches, campsites, and nature reserves, such as Beegderheide and Leudal. To the east of Roermond is also a large national park, De Meinweg.
