The Black Forest, the elongated mountain region in the southwestern part of Germany, actually consists of three parts. The very sparsely populated northern part, with its extensive pine forests and colorful sandstone, has its highest point at Hornisgrinde, 1164 meters. The central section has its peak at 1241 meters and is called De Kandel. The intermediary part of the Schwarzwald is predominantly formed from ancient rock types such as gneiss and granite, but also partially consists of limestone and sandstone. The gently rolling heights are more densely populated than the north, and the forest is interspersed with farmland.
The southern parts are called Hochschwarzwald and feature the most varied landscape and the highest peak: the Feldberg, which is 1493 meters high and also consists of gneiss and granite. Deeply carved valleys and several lakes can be found there. The lakes date back to the Ice Age and are partially used for energy production.
