Antwerp City Theatre

The City Theatre Antwerp is a theater building in Antwerp, located on the Theater Square. The theater hall accommodates about 2,000 visitors. A selection of the musicals performed in the theater includes Mamma mia!, Les Miserables, The Sound of Music, Notre Dame De Paris, Cats, and Shrek. On October 28, 1944, a V1 fell on Bonte Mantelstraat, resulting in 71 deaths and 80 injuries. The destruction was enormous. In 1969, Bonte Mantelstraat and Kanonstraat disappeared to make way for the construction of Theater Square. The city government decided to build the new City Theater at this location. The catalyst was a fire in 1958 that occurred in the cellars of the Bourla Theatre. As a result, several theaters were closed, including the Bourla Theatre. New, stricter fire safety standards were also introduced. Therefore, it was decided to build a cultural temple that would house both the KNS, the KJT, the RVT, and the theater training program. The works ultimately started in 1968 and lasted 12 years.
