Knokke is located next to the Zwin, a nature reserve on the border of Belgium and the Netherlands, and probably emerged in the 13th century after land reclamation. Fishing used to be the main source of income in Knokke. Due to tourism, the population grew significantly.
The seaside resort is known for its exclusivity due to its beautiful natural location, the many large villas, apartments, and the casino. There are plans to renovate the casino by building a 98-meter skyscraper on top of it. These plans are not well received by many people, as they do not fit with the rest of the buildings. There is also a very nice golf club adjacent to the Zwin. Due to the many (fashion) shops, art galleries, and restaurants, Knokke is also referred to as 'Petit Paris'.
