At the beginning of the 20th century, a complex was established to offer exhibition visitors the chance to dance or gamble, should they wish, amid the brand new green Citadel Park.
The party palace was lost sight of during the war years, and most of the halls were demolished in the following years. The Casino was completely renovated in 1949, and part of the party palace was rebuilt in the early 1950s. The northern wing of the complex initially served as a conservatory but was transformed after World War II into the legendary velodrome, 't Kuipke'.
A famous fire in 1962 did cause some disruption, but the cycling track was soon rebuilt. Cycling tourists come here to bike their legs off during the Six Days of Ghent.
In addition to a Casino, a number of exhibition halls, and a cycling track, an International Congress Center was also built in the mid-1970s, and the SMAK has been housed there since 1999.
