The 5500 ha large forest of Anlier is one of the most important in Belgium and extends to the southwest of Martelange. In the only large clearing lie four villages: Anlier, Vlessart, Behême, and Louftémont. This forest is a remnant of the gigantic beech forest that once covered the Ardennes and in which oak, hornbeam, and, on the southern valley slopes, the characteristic pepper tree occurred. The main tree species you will find there now are: sweet chestnut, plane tree, hornbeam, oak, beech, birch, maple, elm, Indian chestnut, fir, Scotch pine, Japanese larch, false acacia, poplar, walnut, forest pear, lime, and willow. And also a wealth of shrub species, including hazel, holly, white hawthorn, rowan, and cornel.
