The three-aisled church was set on fire several times by Protestant beggars, but was rebuilt each time. It has a long history. At the beginning of the eleventh century, the former chapel was converted into a church with the help of the monks of the abbey of St.-Jan-ten-Berghe. The parish church, which was consecrated on 15 August 1080 by the bishop of Terenburg, was built in Romanesque style with a tower at the intersection of the naves. It was made of ironstone that was excavated in the region itself. The bishop was pleased that his diocese was enriched with a new Christian community and a "new church." This is how the estate was given the name 'Neo-Ecclesia' or 'Nieuwe-Kerk'.
