The gate in front of you provides access to the Snouck van Loosen Park: one of the
first social housing projects in the Netherlands (1887). This park, with fifty
workers' houses and a supervisor's house, was funded from the estate of Margaretha
Maria Snouck van Loosen (1807 – 1885). The houses were spacious for that time. The
sewage system, drainage, and the 'indoor toilet' were also considered luxuries. This indoor toilet consisted of a
barrel, which was exchanged through a hatch on the outside of the house. The living rules
were strict. For example, no pets were allowed, and public drunkenness could result in immediate eviction. The park is now owned by the municipality
and the houses are still rented out by a housing corporation.
