In these areas, the peat was at the surface or very shallow. From the 12th century onwards, the peat was excavated here as fuel. The Moere of Meetkerke concerns an area of 570 hectares. It is likely that wealthy patricians from Bruges engaged in peat exploitation here to supply fuel to Bruges. After the peat extraction, these areas became flooded. These areas are indeed below sea level. It was not until the 17th century that pumps (windmills!) were used to drain the area. Currently, this is done with a modern pumping station. In addition to the Moere of Meetkerke, there is also the Grote Moere at the French-Belgian border.
