The canal ring of Amsterdam is the area around the center of Amsterdam along the three main canals: the Herengracht, the Keizersgracht, and the Prinsengracht. From the Brouwersgracht, these canals gradually bend parallel to each other towards the southeast and are fed with water by the Amstel River. The canal ring is, as the author and Amsterdam expert Geert Mak writes, the most beautiful monument of Amsterdam. And certainly one of worldwide significance. The canal ring was constructed as an expansion of the city in the 17th century. In the ring, many beautiful canal houses have been built that still bear witness to the Golden Age, the prosperous period of Amsterdam.
