The winding road near Fort Krommeniedijk runs over a riverbank of the Krommenie River. A riverbank forms when a little sand is deposited near the river each time it overflows its banks. Due to the repeated flooding, a gradual elevation along the river is created, which is a riverbank. Since it is slightly higher and usually consists of sand, these strips were preferred in the past for road construction.
