During executions in World War I, it was not unusual for one soldier in the firing squad to be given a blank round. However, no one knew who had that blank round. This allowed them to comfort themselves with the thought that they had not necessarily killed the person in front of them. The reason for blindfolding the condemned was also related to the fact that the soldiers did not have to look their victim in the eye.
