The Broederkerk is the original monastery church of the Friars Minor or Franciscans, a monastic order of mendicants. The Friar Minor monastery, founded at the end of the thirteenth century, grew into a monastery complex with church, monastery, monastery garden and cemetery. In 1472 the church and the monastery were severely damaged by a fire, but both were rebuilt at the end of the fifteenth century.
