The basilica of Our Lady of Comfort belongs to the Carmelite monastery.
The order of Carmel, also known as Carmelites, is one of the strictest monastic orders that exist. They are cloistered nuns in the true sense of the word.
The entrance gate to the monastery is located in a relatively new wing on Trooststraat. The entrance to the basilica, which is always accessible to the public unlike the monastery, is on Leuvensestraat.
This tranquil basilica, with its hexagonal late Gothic Baroque central building from 1663-1665, is rather simply furnished.
In the north tower, there is a door and a barred window behind which the monastery building is located.
Bringing eggs to summon good weather, and bringing offerings by bakers and celebrants to the monastery, were a tradition in Vilvoorde.
