The direct damage to buildings during World War I in and around Sint-Lievens-Houtem remained quite limited (according to the report of the then pastor of Bavegem, Baert). Except on the day of the armistice:
"And so there was never any significant material damage to lament, except on the day of the armistice, November 11, 1918, two hours before the joyful news was known, the German soldiers blew up a bridge that connected Letterbeek and Letterhoutem with Bavegem. Nearby stands a farm inhabited by the farmer Remi Cobbaut and belonging to Mr. Notary Beyaert from Ghent, and as a result, great damage was inflicted on that property, making the house unusable."
