Location: Sint-Lenardsstraat nr.58
Situation 2008: existing
A little further, also on the right side, we find two statues at the height of the church in the facade of the school ‘De Lenaard’: a statue of Mary and a statue of Saint Gregory.
1st statue: statue of Saint Gregory (above the entrance to the chapel of the old monastery).
It was Amaat Vyncke himself who had this statue of Saint Gregory made by the Bruges sculptor Alfons Coelembier. The statue was consecrated with a grand celebration accompanied by the Xaverian band on 29/09/1879.
The statue of Saint Gregory that stands in the Heemkundig Museum ‘de Groene Tente’ is presumably also by the same sculptor due to the striking similarity.
2nd statue: statue of Mary above the entrance of the original residence, the ground floor of which was built by E.H. Amaat Vyncke. After 1888, the upper floor was added along with the Sint-Lutgardis bell. Currently, the building serves as an office for the school principal.
At the end of the street, we take the right turn onto the Damse Steenweg towards Damme.
