Winok founded a Benedictine abbey in Wormhout in 685, which was destroyed by the Normans. In 1022, under the reign and impulse of Count Baldwin IV with the Beard, the monastic community was transferred to Sint-Winoksbergen. The abbey, along with the seven monasteries in the commune, were closed during the French Revolution. All that remains of the abbey are two towers at the top of the Groenheuvel.
The Piektorre from the 14th century, with octagonal pointed shale top, was rebuilt in 1818 as a beacon for coastal fishermen.
