The fish market in Alkmaar is a national monument that consists of several stone galleries and covered fish counters. In the first half of the 19th century, the building served as a trading office and fish stall. The fish was stored in the galleries and displayed on the stone fish counters for the market.
The Alkmaar fish counters were built in the 16th century and were remodeled into the current fish counters in 1755. The fish market ceased in 1998. Before that, the market took place every Friday.
