Westdorpe is named because of its western location in relation to the city of Axel. Westdorpe lies along the Graaf Jansdijk and is a beautiful example of a dike village with ribbon development. Westdorpe is the second longest village in the Netherlands. The Graafjansdijk used to be part of the land dike between Terneuzen and Boekhoute.
Around 1400, floods from the Braakman caused the village to completely disappear. The northern part disappeared during the Saint Elizabeth's flood of November 19, 1404. The construction of the Graafjansdijk had not yet begun at that time. The saved southern part drowned in 1586 when Prince Maurits captured the city of Axel and flooded Westdorpe to preserve Axel.
