North of the village of Zuidkerke and south of Axel lay a peat area (or "moor") and the Axelse creek, making Zuidkerke poorly accessible from Axel. As a result, the village remained in Spanish hands for a long time during the Dutch Revolt until it was captured by the State Army in 1646. Meanwhile, the Counter-Reformation had done its work and the village largely remained Roman Catholic, in contrast to the region north of Zuiddorpe.
