Nord-Pas-de-Calais, located just over the border with Belgium, offers a wide variety of landscapes. The Cote d'Opale or Opal Coast with its famous chalk cliffs such as Cap Blanc Nez and Cap Griz Nez is the main tourist attraction here. The expansive green hills with the valleys of the Canche and Authie rivers, the marshes of Audomarois, and the fertile plateaus of Artois are also well worth a visit. In addition to this variety of landscapes, there are several cities to explore with a rich historical past such as Arras, Saint-Omer, and the port city of Boulogne. The First and Second World Wars have left clear traces here. Nord-Pas de Calais was an important strategic region during the First World War, and during the Second World War, it was the ideal place for launching V1 and V2 rockets towards London.
