Lot takes its name from the River. The Lot is a tributary of the Garonne. The capital of the Lot, Cahors, is enclosed on three sides by a meander of the River. Lot lives for a large part of tourism. The Lot is a very green area and offers a fascinating landscape with rough limestone plateaus and fertile valleys. The limestone covers the big part of the area and has many caves. These caves are known since prehistoric times. A great example is the cave of Pech Merle in Cabrerets. Saint-Cirq Lapopie is considered one of the most beautiful villages of France, and is a major tourist attraction. Rocamadour is after the Mont-Saint-Michel is the most visited town in France and is also a major pelgrimage spot.
