The Heirbaan, a kilometers-long country road between Arendonk and Oud-Turnhout, was voted the best cycling path in Flanders at the end of April 2008 by the readers of Het Nieuwsblad and a panel of experts led by Eddy Merckx. The concrete surface may not be of the best quality, but because the
road is closed to through traffic, cyclists have it all to themselves. You can ride across the entire width of the road. In the past, cycling students had to share the concrete with illegal drivers who misused the Heirbaan to avoid traffic jams on the Turnhout ring. That situation came to an end four years ago when the municipality of Oud-Turnhout decided to completely close the road. They used some old sewer pipes as a barricade. Cost: 2,500 euros. Proof that you can do a lot for cycling safety with very little money.
