The St. Matthew's Church is the parish church of the place Gijzelbrechtegem, which belongs to the West Flanders municipality of Anzegem, located on Gijzelbrechtegemstraat.
In 1230, there was already a church, of which the patronage rights were held by the Augustinian monastery of Our Lady at Walle in Elsegem. The church was renovated in 1730 and in 1782, when the monastery in Elsegem was dissolved by Emperor Joseph II, the patronage rights went to the St. Veerle Chapter in Ghent.
