Fortified town of Leerdam

Leerdam is a city known for its glass industry. In the cultural field, Leerdam has several museums, including the Glass Museum and the Glassworks where a richly varied collection of glass and crystal can be seen. On foot or by bike you will come across countless historic buildings in Leerdam such as the Hofje van Mevrouw van Aerden and the Grote kerk. The city wall on the Zuidwal tells a lot about the city's past. The shopping center of Leerdam has a diverse range of shops, historic buildings and cozy restaurants.

It is doubtful whether Leerdam can be described as a fortified city. Once upon a time, the city of Leerdam was surrounded by walls, gates and canals. In 1382 Leerdam received a city right from Otto van Arkel. In 1407 a second city right of the Dutch count William VI followed. And in 1428 another city right of Arnold Duke of Guelders followed. At that time, Leerdam was a city in Gelderland for a short period of time. On the southwest corner of the city a castle rose within the ramparts, separated from the city by a moat.
