Die Maasplassen sind durch Kiesentnahme entstanden, hauptsächlich im letzten Jahrhundert. Dadurch entstanden große zusammenhängende Gewässer. Der Kies wurde einst von der Maas abgelagert.
Die Maasplassen in Mittel-Limburg befinden sich zwischen Roermond, Maasbracht und Heel.
Die Maasplassen sind eine touristische Attraktion und auch ein großes Wassersportgebiet. Entlang der Plassen liegen verschiedene gastronomische Einrichtungen, Yachthäfen, Strandbäder, Campingplätze und Naturschutzgebiete, wie die Beegderheide und das Leudal. Im Osten von Roermond liegt ebenfalls ein großer Nationalpark, der Meinweg.
