The Maasplassen were created by gravel extraction, mainly in the last century. This created large contiguous puddles. The gravel was once deposited by the Meuse.
The Maasplassen of Central Limburg are located between Roermond, Maasbracht and Heel.
The Maasplassen are a tourist attraction and are also a large water sports area. Along the lakes are various catering establishments, marinas, day beaches, campsites and nature reserves, such as the Beegderheide and the Leudal. To the east of Roermond is also a large national park, De Meinweg.
