On the 1st of July 1916, the big offensive of the Battle of the Somme was started here at 7.20 am. It was the start of a débacle.
Elsewhere, the attack would be launched a few minutes later at 7.30 am. Along the full length of the front, the soldiers advanced on their thousands, but the Germands were prepared and fought back fiercely. 20 000 British soldiers were killed in one day.
