Grand Central Terminal (often referred to as Grand Central Station) is a New York train station located in the center of Manhattan, in the Midtown area (between 42nd Street and Park Avenue). Today, it is a commuter train terminal owned by Metro-North Commuter Railroad Company, which operates several lines serving Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties in the state of New York, as well as Fairfield and New Haven counties in Connecticut. It is also a major subway station, providing connections between the 4, 5, 6, and 7 lines.
Grand Central Terminal is the largest train station in the world by the number of platforms: 44, which serve 67 tracks. These are divided into two levels, 41 on the upper level and 26 on the lower.
Next to the platforms, there is a shopping arcade, with several restaurants (the most famous being the Oyster Bar), fast food outlets, and newsstands, totaling over forty shops.
The Main Hall
* Main Hall: This is the heart of the station, where ticket counters can be found, although many have been partially replaced by vending machines. In the center, there is an information desk, with a four-faced clock that is one of the major symbols of this station.
* Dining Concourse: Located beneath the main hall, connected by numerous stairs and elevators. It mainly features fast-food outlets.
* Vanderbilt Hall: Although part of the station, this prestigious hall is rented out for various private or public events.
* Grand Central North: This is a modern extension that allows access to the station from 47th and 48th Streets. From there, one can reach the main hall via two corridors that run alongside the tracks.
* Subway Station: Accessible from the main hall. Its architecture is plain, lacking the majestic aspect of the train station. The station was almost entirely destroyed by a fire during the 1960s and has since been rebuilt.
