In 1783, Etienne Montgolfier gave a demonstration of his hot air balloon in Versailles for Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. At the bottom, a sheep, a duck, and a chicken were hanging in a cage to see if 'non-flying animals' would survive such a flight. The flight lasted eight minutes. A strong gust of wind, resulting in a tear in the balloon, ended the air journey of 3.5 km. Soon there were stories circulating that the rooster and the sheep had been injured, but the sheep was seen eating straw in a woods after the landing; the rooster and the duck were huddled together. Nevertheless, the experiment was successful. The sheep "Montauciel" ended its life in the royal zoo.
