Epsom-zouten zijn vernoemd naar de stad Epsom. Epsom-zout werd oorspronkelijk bereid door mineraalwater in Epsom in te koken. In 1618 ontdekte Hendrick Wicker hier minerale bronnen. In de 18e eeuw werd het een beroemd kuuroord, bezocht door leden van het koningshuis. Het zout is een magnesiumsulfaat en wordt voor veel medische doeleinden gebruikt als zout laxeermiddel.
