A partir del cop d’estat en 1936 el control de l’edifici de la companyia telefònica va passar a mans de les milícies anarquistes. El 3 de maig de 1937 els comunistes van atacar els anarquistes i es van atrinxerar al hotel Colón just davant del edifici de la companyia telefònica. La ministra Federica Montseny, ella mateixa membre del moviment sindical anarquista, va posar fi a la batalla campal entre ambdues parts.
