The Amsterdam Internet Exchange, or AMS-IX for short, founded in 1997, plays an essential role in the web. This organisation, which now has five locations in Amsterdam, has developed from the Science Park into the most important internet hub in the Netherlands and even the largest in the world.
The Science Park is home to the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI), an institute that started in 1946 as the Mathematical Centre. From 1970 onwards, a supercomputer was available for this purpose: SARA (Stichting Academisch Rekencentrum Amsterdam), a partnership between the Vrije Universiteit, the University of Amsterdam and CWI.
