If you like wine, this tree might interest you: the Aleppo Pine or Pinus halepensis. You can find a few big examples in the Syngrou park.

They used sap of this tree to put on the inside of amphoras because amphoras were porous. That’s where the origin and taste of the Greek retsina comes from.

Because the Greeks got so used to the taste of the sap, they are now adding it to wine but the sap lost its original function.

Syngrou park is named after the Greek businessman Andreas Syngros. You can still see his mansion a bit higher up in the park.

Syngrou park is one of the most beautiful parks of Attica. No wonder it is popular for hiking, walking the dog, jogging and mountainbiking.

It is hard to believe you are actually in the urban area of Athens when you wander around in Syngrou Park. There is only one major clue that give away that you are not at the real country side: People don’t say hello here in the park. A typical urban phenomena. That would be really rude when you are at the country side.
