The village lies in Zandlemig Flanders, along the Dender, in a rolling landscape with elevations varying between 17m and 77m.
Overboelare emerged in the 13th century as the second parish on the Boelare estate, first mentioned in 822 as ''Buonlare'', which would mean ''swampy wooded terrain'' on flat ground. To differentiate it from the already existing parish of Boelare, the prefixes Neder- and Over- were added to the names, corresponding to the location of the two villages in relation to the Dender.
