Breitenbach is a French commune located in the administrative district of Bas-Rhin and, since January 1, 2021, in the territory of the European Community of Alsace, in the Grand Est region.
The village of Breitenbach is situated in a valley perpendicular to the Giessen de Steige. Surrounded at its confluence by the hills of Erdbeerberg and Hirsten, it opens up into a vast mountainous amphitheater formed by the southern slope of the Champ-du-Feu massif. From west to east, one can see the peaks of Roffling and Champ du Feu, Baylarge, Ibrand, Heidenkopf, and Gietzig, the latter marking the beginning of the ridge leading to Ungersberg. The village is accessible by a few rare passages: the Charbonnière pass leading to the Roche ban, the Kreuzweg pass overlooking Hohwald and Barr, and the Bellevue pass towards Hohwald with a unique forest path. Breitenbach has an area of 1,173 ha and is the largest territory in the canton of Villé.
