Eckartswiller

Eckartswiller is a French municipality with 420 inhabitants in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region.
The village of Eckartsweiler belonged to the Herrschaft Oberbronn, which was documented from the 13th century and successively belonged to a number of noble families. These included the Lords of Ochsenstein, who were succeeded by the Counts of Zweibrücken-Bitsch. From Zweibrücken-Bitsch, the Herrschaft Oberbonn came to this family as a dowry through the marriage of Amelie of Zweibrücken-Bitsch to Philipp I of Leiningen-Westerburg in 1551. Following the Leiningers, the Landgraves of Hesse-Homburg and to a lesser extent the Swedish nobility of the Barons of Sinclair became lords of the Herrschaft Oberbronn in the 17th century. The Hesse-Homburg part passed to the Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Bartenstein family in the mid-18th century, and the Sinclair share went to the also Swedish-descended family of Lewenhaupt. Hohenlohe had to cede the Herrschaft in 1793 to France and was later compensated with territories from the secularized Bishopric of Würzburg. In the administrative reforms following the French Revolution, the Herrschaft Oberbronn was dissolved. Eckartsweiler was now French.
