In Delfzijl there is a statue in honor of the Belgian writer Georges Simenon. The statue does not depict him but rather a character he created during his vacation here: Commissaire Maigret. Maigret was not only conceived in this place, but he is also active in this location in the book "Maigret in Holland", where he assists a French scholar who is suspected of murdering a teacher named Koen Poppinga.
