Charles Wheatstone creò il primo vero telegrafo elettrico. Il primo esperimento per trasferire informazioni attraverso il telegrafo elettrico ebbe luogo tra la stazione Euston di Londra e la stazione di Camden Town il 25 luglio 1837. Sorprendette il Parlamento britannico che non voleva spendere tempo e denaro in giocattoli elettrici inutili.
