Recently restored church dating back to a very old priory
Aywaille had a priory founded by the monks of Cluny who arrived there in 1088. The Jesuits also stayed here. All buildings were secularized and sold in 1785. Part of the old church served as the foundation for the new church built of local stone. The consecration of this new church took place in 1960.
On the outside, to the left of the portal, there is a stone sculpture depicting the crucifixion. The interior leaves a beautiful impression and looks fresh and bright. We see, among other things, a beautiful wooden statue of Saint Peter, the patron saint of the church.
Fun anecdote: in 1254, Thibauld Visconti, from Piacenza (Italy), was the newly elected prior. He was a highly renowned theologian who became pope in 1271, under the name Gregory X. Aywaille can therefore proudly say that they have produced a pope!
