The verb "Opzoomeren" is named after Opzoomerstraat. Ewoud Sanders mentions in his book about place names that in the late 1980s a certain Hooymayer family lived on Opzoomerstraat. They had enough of their run-down neighborhood and asked the neighbors to call the police repeatedly to get rid of drug houses. They also ensured that better lighting was installed. These were called "opzoomer bulbs." Nice facade gardens were also created in the street.
