Het ligt ten zuidwesten van de stad Leeuwarden en ten noorden van Sneek, tussen Oosterlittens en Lions. De dorpskern ligt aan de zuidkant van de Bolswardertrekvaart en door het dorpsgebied stroomt ook de Baardersloot.In 2021 telde het dorp 195 inwoners. Onder het dorp valt een klein deeltje van de buurtschap De Hem. Tussen Baard en De Hem ligt de terp en voormalige buurtschap Faldens.
